The common roots of NanoWattICs' Core Team date back to 1991 when two of its members co-founded the Microelectronics Group at Universidad de la República, Montevideo, Uruguay.

While conducting post-graduate studies at Université Catholique de Louvain (Belgium) in low-voltage, ultra-low power analog IC design, Fernando Silveira (CTO) co-developed the gm/Id design method, which is being taught today at top Universtites such as Standford and Berkeley.  After returning home, he trained the Group in Uruguay and the Group later engaged CCC Medical Devices – Uruguay for the development of a custom ASIC for a DDDR Pacemaker (96’-99’).  CCC is one of the oldest pacemaker manufacturers in the world.  It was founded in 1969 by Dr. Orestes Fiandra, whom together with Dr. Roberto Rubio, performed in Uruguay in 1960 the first effective long-term pacemaker implant on a human being in the world.

Later on, members of the Group went overseas for graduate studies (99'-03') joining companies in Europe and North America after graduation. They, in turn, hired the Group back home to do custom ASIC development.

Finally, since expatriates and their contacts kept the demand for IC contract work, NanoWattICs SRL was incorporated in 2007 to supply such demand.
